Now I can compare this newer version to the Iomega 33654 500GB external drive. Despite my remaining caution since the other commenter's note about noise, I bought the upgrade because I needed more space. It does not disappoint. Both are quiet, fast, sleek, no-nonsense, easy plug-and-play, and complimentary to any computer desk.

My favorite part: both have an on-off switch which. As I said in my review of the older version, this is a small thing that seems a big step up from the WD MyBook 250GB that I also own. Compared to the MyBook, both the Iomega 33654 and the Iomega 34270 are nicer looking and quieter.

The main difference to the layperson, that one cannot tell from the pictures, is the size of the unit. The newer version (this one, the 34270) is 7.9 inches long, while the older 33654 is 8.6 inches. The difference suddenly made the older one (that I thought was so sleek) look bulky and cumbersome on my desk. Both are 5 inches high when standing in their base.

Other differences include a white light on the side of the 34270 (instead of a blue light on the front of the 33654) that is less distracting (though I thought the blue light cool at first), and no little foot pads on the "side" of this (newer) one ... so a possible downside is that, if you lay down the 34270, its shiny finish will touch your desk (no big deal; it looks better standing up in its curvy base anyway :). That last part (no little pads) is the only reason I took off a star.

Oh, did I mention that the newer one is, at least for now, cheaper than the older one? That alone should earn it back a star for a perfect rating, but it might be just a promo. I've had the Prestige for a little over 2 weeks now. It works great.
-There's No annoying software (like my friend's WD Mybook)
-Runs super quiet
-I've had it on for hours at a time and it only gets a little warm
-It's got a cool stand
-It has a power switch

I've been very impressed thus far and would highly recommend this hard drive. Only downside is its actually about 465 gigs [Edit: This review is for the 500GB HD], but most hard drives are like that. The reason I say so far is externals seem to be prone to crashing if you read reviews. Hopefully it lasts forever though.

I think that it's one of the best external hard drives out there. The new model (34270) is a much nicer design than the older one and quieter. The backup software that comes with it is awful though. It's not so easy to use, plus if you choose the wrong options it will end up deleting all the files you have stored on the hard drive. I've got 21 iomega drives - I've been using them for years and I've never had a problem - though a contract employee of mine said one of his died. (He actually just shipped it to me and yep - it's dead.) I just bought my first 1TB drive and I'm psyched. I'm using it to back up my old, lower-capacity drives. It seems as solid as the others. I'm going to fit all the video and projects on my first six drives onto one drive now! It's smaller than any of the others, too - as far as external physical dimensions. They got the dimensions wrong on this site - it's 8 x 4.5 x 1.25. It's awesome. I'm a pro video producer and now thanks to these drives (and a smokin' laptop) I'll be super-portable. Well I bought this drive after the Lacie I had originally bought kept getting I/O errors when used on an iMac with Time Machine. I repartitioned the drive twice and also did a disk test which all came out fine, but after approx 5 days of use each time the Lacie would hang. I suspected a "sleep" issue since the I/O errors always coincided with it sleeping.
Anyway, after checking the Web site for IOMega which assured me that ALL their drives were iMac/Time Machine compatible I bought this. First thing I noticed was how quiet the drive was compared to the Lacie. The Lacie I had to hide behind the desk, it was that loud. This drive sits behind my iMac and although you do hear a little disk noise it really is negligible. The other important thing is that its worked perfectly with Time Machine for the last month, without any errors. Does exactly what it was bought for.
One last thing. The build quality was phenomenal compared to the Lacie I bought. Nice metal like casing that matches the iMac nicely. Nice solid feel to it. And to top it all it WAS CHEAPER than the Lacie.

I stopped using Iomega products several years ago (remember the infamous "click of death" infesting Iomega Zip drives?) But after reading the Amazon reviews, I decided to get the Iomega 1TB drive.

It is about half the size of my old 350 GB Maxtor hard drives, costs half as much, and has three times the storage capacity! I plugged it in and Windows XP had it up and running in seconds, no fuss.

As a test, I transferred two gigs of photos (I'm a photojournalist) and it backed up two gigs in two minutes. It is almost perfectly silent.

I didn't bother downloading the free Retrospect Backup software; I always back up manually as part of my business routine.

If I ever have a problem with this drive, I'll update this review. Otherwise, I rate it as a perfect high-capacity drive, period.

The units I purchased both had current models of Seagate Barracuda drives installed: excellent devices. Right now, the drives themselves from some sources cost only a few dollars less than the iomega unit, so you are getting the external housing for just a few dollars.

The housing has a power switch, very nice at a time when other manufacturers are eliminating such "frills" and a white activity light on the side, which strikes me as a strange place for it. Since the housing has no fan, there is no fan noise. The noise from the drive itself should be imperceptible. (If it isn't, return the unit immediately.)The housing remains cool to the touch in use.

The unit size is nice and a plastic base is included for those who prefer a vertical mounting.

A power supply and USB cable round out the package.

One of the very nice aspects of this unit is that there is no software installed on the drive - nor is any included in the box. Yea! The drive comes NTFS formatted and, for use with an Apple Macintosh, must be reformatted.

Overall, a very nice value.

I have 3 external hard drives: A LaCie, a Westen Digital My Book Essential and an Iomega Prestige.

I ordered this as a pair for a 1TB Seagate of similar size. I am a bit paranoid about my backups and I am planning to keep everything that I care about on 2 separate devices, physically apart from each other - I am talking about family pictures, videos, tax returns... highly personal stuff.

After using this for about one month, I can't think of any major issues. In fact I can't think of too many minor issues either, except maybe for the metallic finish clashing a bit with the rest of my computer 'stuff' which tends to be black.

+ The unit comes with some backup software but I like to be in control myself so I can't say that I bothered testing it. It's good to know it's there though.

This is a great product! Easy to install and get started. As soon as I received the Iomega Prestige I had it installed and backing up my entire system within 20 minutes. I think this is a statistics thing.
I got the drive two days ago and found it was not working right. The USB device was installed automatically in my PC, but got CRC errors in creating new folders and failed to read/write files most of time.

After using what used to be called a "Firelite" firewire external drive for several years, I find that the Iomega USB backup software has a difficult format to use, does not have a "purge" option, and individual files have to be retrieved though a manipulation of the Back up sets. Not terribly convenient. I rarely use the drive, reserving it in case my Firelite should ever give up the ghost. And, being a USB, it takes much longer to back up. What a great back up storage unit!...and at a great price too!

I've been in need of a good back up storage solution for my laptop files for a while. I've been procrastinating on getting one and when researching all the products out there, the Iomega Prestige seemed like a good choice, I'm very happy with my decision.

When I first fired it up, I did need to reformat the drive so it would be compatible with my Apple Powerbook but once that was done, I could easily drag and drop the files I wanted backed up right onto the drive's icon on the computer's desktop. There was no need for any additional back up software like my friend's WD back up drive. He said after a free 3 month trial, WD required a fee to continue using their back up software...bah, thank goodness there's none of that hassle with the Iomega Prestige. There are absolutely no software compatibility issues with my Mac.

The drive itself is very quiet, I can barely here it even when it's starting up. The Drive has a brushed aluminum case which is very stylish and it actually looks great together with the Powerbook since the laptop also has an aluminum finish, not a perfect match but still similar. I know that's not a huge factor but it was a nice extra for me.

The housing has a power switch which is another nice extra and will probably extend the life of the drive. I only need to boot up the drive when I have files I need backed up, not every time I start up the laptop. The housing also has an activity light that's located on the side of the case. The light is white and not distracting to me at all.

I happily give the Iomega Prestige 5 stars; for the great price, the stylish aesthetics, and the ease of use. For me, the drive truly is plug and play with no additional software needed... In fact, there is no software that comes packaged with the drive at all, just the drive, the stand for mounting it vertically on your desk, a power supply cord, a USB cable, and instructions.
