I've been in need of a good back up storage solution for my laptop files for a while. I've been procrastinating on getting one and when researching all the products out there, the Iomega Prestige seemed like a good choice, I'm very happy with my decision.

When I first fired it up, I did need to reformat the drive so it would be compatible with my Apple Powerbook but once that was done, I could easily drag and drop the files I wanted backed up right onto the drive's icon on the computer's desktop. There was no need for any additional back up software like my friend's WD back up drive. He said after a free 3 month trial, WD required a fee to continue using their back up software...bah, thank goodness there's none of that hassle with the Iomega Prestige. There are absolutely no software compatibility issues with my Mac.

The drive itself is very quiet, I can barely here it even when it's starting up. The Drive has a brushed aluminum case which is very stylish and it actually looks great together with the Powerbook since the laptop also has an aluminum finish, not a perfect match but still similar. I know that's not a huge factor but it was a nice extra for me.

The housing has a power switch which is another nice extra and will probably extend the life of the drive. I only need to boot up the drive when I have files I need backed up, not every time I start up the laptop. The housing also has an activity light that's located on the side of the case. The light is white and not distracting to me at all.

I happily give the Iomega Prestige 5 stars; for the great price, the stylish aesthetics, and the ease of use. For me, the drive truly is plug and play with no additional software needed... In fact, there is no software that comes packaged with the drive at all, just the drive, the stand for mounting it vertically on your desk, a power supply cord, a USB cable, and instructions.

As for the downloadable 'backup' software, I tried it but wasn't impressed. Even through USB 2.0, the speed wasn't good. The backup process doesn't perform any real-time verification during the process, so after the backups are complete, you have to wait for an additional time to verify the backup. Since I've got the O/S installation media (and licensing) and media for the other software installed, my primary need for the drive is for archiving purposes - which can be handled much more easily by simply copying the necessary files over myself.

A few things to consider when buying this drive.

First, unlike many externals on the market, this one does not use the USB port for power. You must plug in a wall wart. That's OK with me, since my house current is more reliable and predictable than USB power, but be advised. The ON/OFF switch is a nice feature. It is quiet.

Second, about the "free" software: It's not free; nothing is. THe cost is built in to the price of the hardware. Whether you elect to use it is your business. The good news is that installing the backup software--in my case, it was Retrospect Express HD v. 2.5 for Windows--is optional. It's not loaded onto the drive itself, so you don't have to install it. The bad news is that you may not like it if you do install it. There have been quite a few problems. (Check the EMC support forums for a sample at [....]) The software will install a startup program that runs when you boot up and can't be removed or opted out of. I uninstalled the software itself, but the startup program remains and EMC tech support can't tell me how to get rid of it. It will also establish an internet connnection to the Mozy Home online backup service. You cannot opt out of this during installation either. And why would you want online backup if you've just bought a new external? If, like me, you don't appreciate software creating unwanted startup programs and net connections on your machine, you may want to avoid Retrospect. I just use MS Backup. Well, I was in the market for an external that was reliable, as I planned to back up my important documents/files...and of course, all my music! The Design:

The hard drive boasts a brushed silver-metallic casing. You can set the hard drive in either a vertical position (by means of a plastic stand), or horizontally. It really depends on how much space you have on your desk.

Note, also, that the USB cord that extends from the hard drive to the PC is rather short. So, keep that in mind.

Overall the design is very minimalist and features one light on the side that flashes white.

Function:

I've owned this hard drive for a good month now, and it's been fantastic. It will even shut off when you shut your computer off, which can be handy. The hard drive doesn't "whir" very loudly...in fact, I don't even notice it. Now, this fan does have a tendency to get 'warm', not 'hot', mind you, but it does get a little bit warm. However, the location of my hard-drive is near a window which I always keep slightly open, so the hard drive never exceeds room-temperature.

Conclusion:

...I'm more than pleased with this product as when I bought it, it had only 6 reviews...but all 6 reviews were 5 stars. Now, the item has over 30 reviews and the average is pretty good! I'd say that's good enough proof that this hard-drive can stand the test of time and use!

Well, it seems that my drive is having the same problem as the other 1star reviewer. Click, click, click and it just refuses to cooperate. Customer service at Iomega is going to get an EARFUL!

Well after a few chats with Iomega tech support, they expedited the shipping of a replacement unit to me, which i received yesterday. the replacement unit is, for the record, a refurbished product and not new.

it seemed to have been delivered within 2 days, so that was nice. also, the procedure is that you return the broken drive to them in the box that the replacement was shipped in. and it has to be dropped off at a Fedex drop-off location.

i have yet to turn on my replacement external because i'm actually a little nervous. dunno what to expect. although a friend pointed out that at least with a refurb, it's been tested unlike a new-off-the-assembly-line hard drive.

I bought this hard drive in November 2008 but didn't actually take it out of the box until late December. Less than a week after unboxing it, I turned it on only to have it start spinning uselessly. Support is annoying at best; I dislike using online chats for support (the only free option) and phone calls run $25 per incident. Email isn't available at all. It's ridiculous. I bought this product one month ago based on the good reviews from amazon.com. So far it works great. The following are those I like.

1. This external hard drive works quietly. It seems that there is no fan to cool the hard drive, maybe b/c the hard drive does not generate much heat or the heat was dispersed through the alumimium shell quickly.

2. There is an on/off switch at the back of the hard drive, which is very helpful. I had bad experience to leave my old external hard drive on for very long time (it did not have an on/off switch), resulting the breakdown of the hard drive and losing all data (Hope this will never happen to you).

I just opened and used this on christmas but I haven't had any problems with it yet.

I read the reviews for this and some people said it was really slow. I haven't really had a problem like this, I'm not saying its the fastest thing ever but I went from an 80gb to this 1tb so maybe I am used to slow? To me though it is fast enough. it transfered all 80gb's from my old one in way faster than I thought it would. I don't really remember how long it took but I think it took a little bit more than an hour, I don't remember, maybe 2, but I thought that would take waayy longer.

One thing I DONT LIKE though is that it uses like 69gb to function or w/e as in i only can use 931gb. This was disappointing because like I said before I had an 80gb external hard drive and 69gb is almost the amount of it. I don't know why it uses that much but too me it seems like it shouldn't.
