I wanted to create a Macintosh partition so I could use it with both my Mac and my wife's PC. I created two partitions using Apple's Disk Utillity, and tried to format one for the Mac. But it formatted both for the Mac, leaving no partition visible to the PC. I now have an Apple-only disk. If anything, this is Apple's fault, not Iomega's. My machine is a MacBook Pro 15", Intel Core 2 Duo with 150 GB Fujitsu hard drive. I purchased this laptop a little over a year ago and it has worked like a champ. This is my second Mac and first with OSX tiger installed.
I decided that it was time to find an external hard drive and start doing some serious backing up. I turned to Amazon.com because I have purchased many computer related items here without any complaints.
My older Mac Power PC came with an Iomega zip drive and it has never given me any trouble. Back in the days before writable discs, when most removable storage was on floppies, Iomega zips were a God sent. When I came upon an Iomega 1TB external drive, I decided on my past experience with Iomega to go ahead and purchase one. The price was right where I wanted it to be ($106).
I Goggled it to see what others might have to say and was pleased with the good and was understandable with the bad. One of the negative comments was that Iomega does not manufacture hard drives so there is no way to determine before hand what would be installed. Another commented that it was preloaded for Windows and he had trouble getting it to work with a Mac and that there were no instructions included to tell how to reformat the hard drive. After reading everything, I still thought that I'd made the right choice.
The unit arrived and I was impressed with it right out of the box and it did come with instructions on how to reformat. It has only USB 2 for connection to the machine (cord included). But, that worked out alright for me since everything else I have is connected through hubs. The desk adaptor allows the brushed aluminum housing to be set on the table in an upright position on it's side which looks great. The plug in power transformer comes with a sufficiently long cord to reach to my power strip with ease.
It's icon came right up on the desktop when I turned it on. Disk Utility indicated that the drive is an Hitachi. Reformatting for Mac was a snap with the enclosed instructions. Just be sure to select the lower icon in Disk Utility, the one that is named and be sure you check all the boxes.
So much for the mechanics, now comes the setting it up for use. Iomega includes what it calls a "free license for an EMC Retrospect Backup product to best fit your needs". The numbers are printed in the sales pitch included. I had been using a trial version of iGeek's Data Backup with Mobile Me. It was working alright, but I thought, holy smokes, EMC Retrospect for free. So I went for the download and loaded the application. The GUI really wasn't that much different. The workings were a little more difficult to set up than Data Backup. However, when I went back in to do some tweaking, it again asked me for the license number. When I entered the number provided, the response was "This license number is incorrect. Please try again.". ARRGGG. Three more tries and I put AppCleaner to work. That was the end of Retrospect. I went back to Data Backup and purchased the full version. By the way, I got a heck of a good price on Amazon.
That's my story of how it went with Iomega on Thursday. It is now Saturday afternoon and it's still sitting on my desk, looking, and feeling, cool. Backup 3 did an excellent job cloning my hard drive. I've been slipping files in and out without a hitch. So, would I say buy it? Based on my experience so far, I would say... Yes.

We got one at work to back up our field laptops. I was impressed on how well it connected and worked with each laptop so I ordered one from Amazon for myself.
Super Saving Shipping.. It works and it's cheap but basically they delay shipment a few days so it arrives later than if you were to pay shipment. The 1st Estimate of arrival was almost 20 days but the estimate was updated and it arrived almost exactly at the end of 10 days. My credit card was not charged until it shipped.
With Free Shipping and Amazon pricing, I paid almost $40 less than work paid.
I reformatted and repartitioned the drive using XP Pro so I have two 258 GB partitions and 1 500GB partition. I have two desktops and 1 laptop all XP.
Initially I thought I had a problem because my desktop. The desktop took over 10 hrs to backup 56GB on to Iomega Drive. I took the drive to work and tried it on the laptops and it performed just like the one at work.
I tried backup on the other desktop and my other laptop at home. The problem is that my desktop has 1.0 USB not 2.0. The other desktop and laptop have 2.0 USB. I think part of the problem is not just with the slower USB port that the drive's USB is not fully 1.0 USB compatiable.
I updated my desktop with an addon ULTRA 2.0 USB card and my desktop and the Iomega still had some issues. It is USB related and I do not believe it is Iomega's problem.

My WB drive crashed and I needed another drive. I read the reviews and thought I would give it a try. What a mistake. Amazon should really take this brand off the site. The drive is not formatted when you get it, not easy to use at all. I suppose I should have paid attention to all the reviewers that had to call for technical support on an External Hard Drive....Really? It should not be that difficult to use. I could of put up with that because I am fairly technology savy, but it also runs EXTREMELY hot - it only has one little vent in the back, which although I like the look of the drive, it is not practical. The drive worked great for about ten months, then just stopped. I logged on at Iomega customer support and in the forums found that many others have the same problem. The data is still there, but the pc doesn't see the drive because of either flaws in the enclosure or problems with the drive's firmware. Iomega suggests checking the power supply. Did that with no luck. If you are under warranty they will get around to replacing your drive, but you would have to pay extra for data recovery.

Iomega products are not really MacIntosh compatible, and their customer service is basically unavailable.
I tried the Prestige 500, and their smaller sized portable exturnal hard drive. Following the instructions was simple to get to the disk utility, but then the icon selection as compared to the instructions was completely different, and none of the obtions was accepted by my computer with either product. Calling to their "help" phone number will cost you $25 per call, even if the product is new out of the box, and under regeistered warrenty. A "chat line" is available for technical help, but after waiting 20 minutes, no log on or response occured. It's like dealing with my phone company or power company. They are all over you when you want to buy something, but when there is a problem, they aren't very interested.
