The unit is a bit on the large side to treat as a portable, but small enough to tuck just about anywhere on or around your desk. Made of nice looking brushed steel, in case you decide to place it somewhere visible... but no need to. The only control is an on/off switch.
The instructions say not to run the drive through a USB hub, but I have in order to simplify docking of my laptop. I use a powered CyberPower hub; no issues at all. Works great with Symantec's backup utility.
I have not used this drive for anything that requires prolonged, rapid access such as editing video. I'll have to let others speak to its performance there. I use it as a backup drive and for occasional file access, and it meets all of my expectations. Most of the wait on my backups is the reading of my laptop's internal drives, not the writing to this external one.
