Purchase Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34275

The pictures of this make it look much, much nicer than it actually is. There is a lot of dull gray plastic on the real enclosure that gives it a cheap look. I was shocked when I first opened it to find that out.

Also, the drive has a tendency to attach and detach itself from the computer so that the "device installed" sound will start to repeatedly play after the drive has been on for a while. I have to turn the drive off and let it sit before I can use it again without this sound.

I'm worried that this means the drive will soon fail... I've already put too many personal files on it to exchange it for a new one so I couldn't tell you whether this is specific to my machine, but due to the false advertising of the images alone I would still give this three stars.

The power button is too tight and makes the drive move any time I want to turn it on or off. The front faceplate is cheap plastic and that causes me to wonder what else in the machine has been made of cheap plastic. And that might be the cause of the problems I have with it. I think the drive may be overheating causing it to drop and then pick up the connection with my computer numerous times. So, it just feels cheaply made and a hassle to turn on. Even compared with older Iomega drives this doesn't compete well as those seem generally to cool better and contain more metal, less plastic, and drop-less connections to my computer.

It's very annoying and I wish I'd gone with a better drive.
Mostly I wish they'd let me just send the enclosure back in order to get a new external drive because I can't let them have the actual hard drive back since I stupidly set up an automatic backup of my system that has likely put all kinds of personal log in and banking information onto it.

I should have only used it for inconsequential things like MP3s and avi files until I learned whether it was stable or not. Get more detail about Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34275.
