Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34275 Top Quality

Took it out of the box, followed the quick start directions, and my Sony Vaio VGN N395E running Vista recognized the hardware immediately.

I didn't bother with the downloadable backup software that purchasers of this drive can download at no additional cost. Instead I created four folders on the 1 TB Iomega Prestige: Photos, Videos, Documents, and Music. Then I dragged my photos, videos, documents, and music into those folders. When I'm done saving I click the icon that brings up a you-can-safely-remove-this-device message, and I reach behind the drive and turn the power switch to off.

Using it this way means that it is never running any longer than the time it takes to back up whatever I want to back up at a given time. I have second copies of most of the stuff on the Iomega on a Simpletech drive that I will soon run out of space on. At that point I will consider a second Iomega Prestige, though just for the sake of variety and comparison I may choose a different brand such as Western Digital. It's just a fact of life that you have to have at least two pieces of backup hardware so you can make two backup copies of everything you want backed up, in case the main unit you're backing up fails and one of your backup units also fails.

I find the unit nice looking and easy to use and I don't know what more I could ask. It would not be convenient for use in an airport or a cafe, but if I feel a need to bring it along with my Vaio when I'm visiting friends or relatives for several days, it's compact enough for that (though I haven't actually done that yet and may never feel a need to, and by compact enough I mean it's the size of a quality paperback book - just under 8 inches by just under 5 inches by almost 1 1/4 inches - this is without the plastic stand - and without the adapter, plastic stand, and USB cable it weighs approximately 2 lbs., and that's according to my analog postal scale rather than the manufacturer's specifications).

It's a digital world and we have to back up the digital information we don't want to risk losing, and this backup drive seems to be one of the best choices in terms of quality and price (I paid a penny under a hundred) for a 1 TB unit.

Based on my experience, I recommend it. Based on my experience with Amazon's return service, if you have a problem within the first 30 days that is due to a defect with the product, contact Amazon rather than Iomega, and the return process will be smooth and professionally handled.

The simplicity of this unit is a real plus. (My Simpletech drive has some kind of "One Touch Back Up" button with flashing lights that I could never get to work, and my emails to Simpletech about this problem went unaswered.) The first time I used the Iomega Prestige there was less than 1 TB of space on it - other reviewers have noted the same thing - it had about 936 GB of space. I use it formatted as it came out of the box.Get more detail about Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34275.
