I'm reviewing the 500 GB USB 2.0 version. The 'mixed marriage' of the subject line refers to those who use both a PC & a Mac. In the technical specs for this product (on amazon.com) it's stated that system requirements are PC Windows XP and later or MAC OS X 10.3 and later. The catch is that you can't fully use the hard drive for both systems at the same time. The hard drive works well straight out of the box on my Windows laptop. However, when connected to my iMac I only have the ability to read from the hard drive - no writing allowed. If I wanted to write to the drive from the Mac (& I do) then I'd have to go through some reformatting gobbledygook which presumably would limit the drive's usefulness w/ Windows. This limitation is spelled out in the documentation which comes w/ the unit - it's just not made explicit in the amazon.com writeup. I'm not enough of a tech person to know the reason for the limitation (perhaps the 500 GB size exceeds some operating system limit?) but I do know that I've used other external hard drives that didn't have this problem (e.g., a smaller sized WD MyBook).
All that said, the Iomega unit works wonderfully in windows. The on/off switch is appreciated as is the lack of pre-loaded software.Get more detail about Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34275.
