Cheapest Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34275

This is my first review. I bought this product based on the Amazon reviews so I feel obligated to return the favor.

I am a graphic designer, itunes addict, and Mac user. I have owned many, many ext hard drives over the years. I run my itunes off ext hard drives, save my graphic work and back it all up on another ext hard drive. It's the way I roll. When my wonderful Seagate 200 gig was just too small I decided to upgrade to a 1 tera. I should have bought another Seagate but the reviews for this one were so good.

There are only a few things you want a hard drive to do: not fail, mount quickly, read quickly, be quiet and STAY CONNECTED. My Seagate did all these things flawlessly for two years.

Out of the box this hard drive was SLOW to respond. If I click a song in iTunes there is sometimes, but not always, a 3-10 second delay. Not so on the Seagate. I got over that and moved on. By far the most annoying hiccup is the fact that this hard drive will randomly dismount. This can be very bad when working on a file in photoshop and trying to save it to said hard drive. I have lost hours of hard work because of this little flaw.

Also, and this may be unfounded, but I trusted the sturdy plastic casing around the Seagate and it sat nicely on my desk and it was not as heavy. This hunk of metal seems ready to fall apart and it's like picking up a gyroscope when it's on. As I said I'm a graphic designer not an engineer but still the whole thing seems chintzy to me.

I give it two stars because though it has disappointed in most criteria it is quiet and has yet to actually fail. But there's still time for that and where there is smoke there is usually fire, so we'll see. Get more detail about Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34275.
