I won't lie and say I'm an external hard drive expert, but what I wanted was something reliable (and cheap) to keep all my files safe in case my laptop should explode and so far, this little iomega has done just fine. I've had it for 4 months now and haven't had any trouble. I know that's not a long, long time so I can't comment on the life-span of one of these guys, but I can't complain either. I wouldn't say I'm the most gentle, either. I don't wear it down to death, but I've uploaded 10+ gbs at one time to the thing without it freezing or shutting down or anything. I've left it running for long period of times, and although it gets a little hot, the fan seems to work well. Overall it gets very casual usage from me, I rarely turn it on unless I have to get at an old file I need, and for that kind of usage its been working like a charm!
As far as setup goes, it couldn't have been easier. Simply plug into usb and chug. With my windows vista, it immediately asks me what I want to do when I turn her on, and usually I just choose "view files" and browse for anything I might need to view. Opening files from the iomega is just as fast as if I were opening it from my desktop. Uploading files to the hard drive is quick as well, and unless its a really big file it usually takes less than a second or two.
Overall, as a techie newbie, an external hard drive seems like something everyone should have. I've been burned several times with computer viruses or crashes that wiped out my memory. With this, the chances of it crashing or getting a virus is much slimmer. Not to say that you shouldn't backup the backup, but this is way better than a usb memory stick. 500gb is a lot of memory, especially if you just have a lot of music or pictures. It's small, and looks good sitting on your desk. I haven't tried any other external hard drives to compare, but I couldn't be happier with this product!
