I have a small external drive farm for my desktop. A 500Gb Dlink NAS and three smaller external USB drives. I used the Iomega as a backup for my 500Gb Dlink NAS. So pretty low usage: backed up everything once and then just incremental daily changes.
Almost immediately the Iomega started giving me trouble: "Power surge on USB port", where I would have to "reset" the USB port. Eventually the Iomega stopped showing up in XP. Could find the drive by remapping it and then reformatting... it continued to work intermittently. I noticed that jiggling the USB cable would sometimes cause the "Power surge..." error... which made me think that the interface wiring/soldering was a bit loose. But now after 5 months the drive is unreadable and can't be reformatted. So a nice silver door stop.
Replaced the Iomega with a Western Digital Elements drive. Looking at both drives, interesting to note that the Iomega says "assembly in Thailand" and "further assembly in China", while the WD has all assembly in Thailand. My guess is that the Iomega platter/spindle/head/arm are from Thailand, but that the drive enclosure/interface/connector are from China - and the likely source of the problem. Hopeful that the WD's more uniformly positive reviews bode well.
