I purchased 2 of these. One for my PC and one for my wife's. When they arrived I was surprised by their weight. I definitely felt like I had a rugged piece of equipment in my hands. (Remember, Never move a Hard Disk when it is running)
The installation was as simple as could be. My machine running Windows XP discovered and installed the drive. In a matter of seconds my new device was ready to use. Imagine looking at your "My Computer" folder and seeing 1Tb of empty space!
I opened my new drive (HDD "F" in my case) and copied 761Mb of files to the drive for a test. The copy was accomplished in 54 seconds. Not lightning, but not bad.
I went to the Iomega site to download the backup software (EMC Retrospect Express) and to be honest my machine had issues with it. Received "IRQ not less than or equal) error. Perhaps it can be worked out, I don't know but at any rate I went to [...] and downloaded the open source program called "Areca". It does full and incremental backups. I backed up my entire 268Gb system (across 3 drives) to the Iomega Prestige in 23 hours with verification. Now, that may seem a long time, but remember when you backed-up to one 1.4 Mb floppy at a time? For DAYS?
In that 24 hour run, the unit never got any warmer than a sleeping puppy. My cooling fans drowned out any noise the drive may have been making.
If this thing goes blooey, I will update the review.Get more detail about Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 34275.
